FOOTBALL: Cavs (3-1) Win Third Straight/Morgan Special Teams MSFA Player of the Week
NAIA No. 24 Walsh scored 45 first half points on their way to their third straight win, 59-21 at Urbana University on Saturday. This Saturday the Cavs return home (Fawcett Stadium) for their Mid-States Football Association Mideast opener against Olivet Nazarene University 1-3, 0-1) at 12 pm. The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER (www.wcer.us) and on NewsTalk 640 WHLO (www.640whlo.com).Tickets are available at the Giant Eagle at Washington Square, the Raisin Rack on Cleveland Avenue and Spectrum Orthopaedics on Whipple Avenue in North Canton.
Walsh opened the scoring with a TD on their first possession, as Clinton Blossomgame (Jr., Columbus, OH/Beechcroft) scored on a nine-yard run to cap a seven-play, 35-yard drive to give the Cavs a 7-0. Urbana would answer with back-to-back scores to take a 14-7 with 3:51 to play in the first quarter.Walsh evened the score on their next possession, as Blossomgame scored on a one-yard run with 56 seconds left in the quarter to tie the game at 14.On Urbana's next series, the Cavs recorded two sacks, then Justin Brown (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) recovered a Blue Knight fumble at the 48-yard line with one second to play in the quarter.Walsh turned the turnover into points when Jim Shiplett (So., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) hit Joe Morgan (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley/Illinois) on a 52-yard pass play on the final play of the quarter to give the Cavs a 21-14 lead.
The Cavs then exploded for 24 second quarter points to lead 45-14 at the half.Walsh extended the lead to 28-14 when Shiplett hit Robert Wigfall (R-Fr., Youngstown, OH/Hubbard) on a 75-yard bomb.It was Wigfall's first collegiate catch.After a second straight three and out for Urbana, Eric Buchanan (Jr., Lehigh Acers, FL/East Lee County) kicked a 26-yard field goal to give Walsh a 31-14 lead with 8:08 to play in the half.On Urbana's next series, Morgan blocked a fourth down punt and returned it 15 yards to a score to put the Cavs in front 38-14 at the 6:41 mark of the quarter.Walsh's Pat Kane (R-Fr., Bolivar, OH/Tusky Valley) then intercepted a Blue Knight pass on the next series, which set-up Walsh's final score of half, a Shiplett to Mike McGill (Sr., Barberton, OH/Coventry) four-yard TD strike with 16 seconds left in the half. The half ended when Tony Stover (R-Fr., Akron, OH/Northwest) intercepted a Blue Knight pass in the final seconds. The Cavs scored twice more in the third quarter.Blossomgame rushed for his third score of the game on a eight-yard run and Stover returned a fumble 49 yards for a score. Urbana tacked on their final TD at the 2:55 mark of the third quarter.
Joe Morgan's special teams play earned MSFA Player of the Week accolades.Besides blocking a punt and returning it for a score, Morgan returned a kick-off for 46 yards to start the game and three punts for 59 yards. He also caught five passes for 129 yards. Blossomgame rushed for 155 yards on 27 carries, and now has 605 yards on the season with seven touchdowns and leads the MSFA in rushing average (151.2) and scoring (42 pts.). Jim Shiplett completed 9-17 passes for 236 yards and three TDs. Walsh rolled-up 427 yards total offense, while holding Urbana to 192 yards.
Brian Williams leads the MSFA in kick return average (29.4) and Pat Kane is first in interceptions per game (0.75). Joe Morgan is second in receiving yardage per game at 96.2.
Walsh plays host to 1-3 Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday in the Cavs' Homecoming Game. The Tigers won their first game of the season last Saturday, defeating Southern Nazarene University 56-35.The Tigers are 0-1 in the MSFA Mideast, losing 58-20 to Saint Xavier University two weeks ago. ONU scored 14 points in each quarter in their win on Saturday, and amassed 625 yards of total offense. Quarterback Sam Smidt passed for five TDs and 399 yards, while running back Anthony Collier rushed for 149 yards.Wide receiver Andrew Butler caught six passes for 158 yards and three TDs. Walsh leads the all-time series 3-1, and won the last meeting 24-14.
CROSS COUNTRY: Teams to Compete at All-Ohio Meet
Walsh's men (15-15) and women (15-15) will compete at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships this Friday in Delaware, Ohio. The men's race will start at 2:45 pm, with women's race slated to start at 2 pm. Last year was the first time that the men did not run the race, while the women also missed the meet for the first time.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs 5th at DePauw Classic
Walsh (26-14) finished fifth at the 16-team DePauw Small College Classic. Lightning halted first round play on Saturday, but with clearing skies the classic was completed on Sunday. Walsh shot 672 (333-339), finishing just eight strokes behind fourth place Franklin College.Saint Mary's College (IN) won the classic with a 36-hole score of 635.
Nikki Kulasa (So., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) finished 12th with a two day total of 163 (82-81).Kim Smith (So., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored 167 (83-84) to finish tied for 18th.Katie Kohut (Fr., Twinsburg, OH/Walsh Jesuit) shot 171 (83-88) and finished tied for 27th. Katy Collins (So., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) tied for 29th at 173 (85-88) and Abbey Kimar (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) tied for 30th at 174 (88-86).
This Friday and Saturday, the Cavs play at the Ohio Dominican University Kiser Classic at Cumberland Trail Golf Course, Pataskala, OH.
MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (3-4, 0-3) Fall to 0-3 in AMC
Walsh (3-4, 0-3) dropped its third straight American Mideast Conference last week, losing 5-0 to Notre Dame College last Tuesday night at home.The Cavs are back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Lake Erie College for a non-conference game at 4 pm. Walsh returns home, and to AMC play on Saturday, when they host Shawnee State University at 7 pm.
Notre Dame scored early and often with the first goal coming at the 14-minute mark. Two more goals followed in the next seven minutes to close the scoring for the first half. Two more goals followed in the second half as the Falcons controlled the momentum of the game and outshot the Cavaliers 11-4.
WOMEN'S SOCCER:(1-4-2, 1-3) Open AMC Play with Back-to-Back Losses
Walsh split American Mideast Conference games last week and stand 1-4-2 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Cavs won their first game of the season, 2-1, against Notre Dame College at home on Tuesday. On Saturday, the Cavs fell 1-0 at home to Mount Vernon Nazarene University. This week, the Cavs host Ursuline College on Wednesday night in an AMC battle at 7 pm, and then host Shawnee State University on Saturday at 4:30 pm in another AMC contest.
The Cavaliers snapped a five-game winless streak, and gave head coach Sara Renard her first win with their come-from-behind effort on Tuesday night at home.Notre Dame scored first and led 1-0 at the half. Walsh then scored their first goal since the September 1, when Carley Adams (Fr., 5-7, Louisville, OH/HS) tied the game at the 54:52 mark. A couple of minutes later, Rachel Naumann (Jr., 5-3, Hinckley, OH/Highland) was awarded a penalty kick and provided the game-winning goal.
Mount Vernon (4-3-1, 3-1) scored the game only goal at the 68:34 mark of the second half in besting the Cavs 1-0 on Saturday.
VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Extend Win Streak to Nine/Remain Unbeaten in AMC
Walsh improved to 13-1 on the season and to 1-0 in the American Mideast Conference, after defeating Notre Dame College at home last Tuesday night.The win was the ninth straight for the Cavs.This week, the Cavs travel to Carlow College for an AMC contest on Tuesday and compete in the Papa John's Invitational at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Friday and Saturday.The Cavs tangle with Roberts Wesleyan at 6 pm and the host Cougars at 8 pm.On Saturday, the Cavs meet Bryan College at noon and Bethel College at 2 pm.
The Cavs ousted Notre Dame College by the scores of 25-17, 30-28, 22-25, 25-21.Hannah Duran (5-9, Fr., Grafton, OH/Midview) led the offense with 50 assists and nine digs. Middle blockers Natalie Borland (6-0, Sr., Kent, OH/HS/Kent State) and Brittany Morris (5-11, Fr., North Royalton, OH/Padua) led with 19 and 14 kills respectively.Julianne O'Donnell (5-10, Fr., Willowick, OH/Lake Catholic) added 11 digs and a team-high three service aces.Natalie Phillips (5-10, So., Wooster, OH/HS) also added 14 digs and eight kills.
Hannah Duran is tied for the AMC lead in assists and is averaging 11.3 per game.Julianne O'Donnell is second in service aces (0.5) and Kristen Rohlfs (5-7, So., Loveland, OH/Mount Notre Dame) is second in digs (6.0).
