FOOTBALL: Cavs Open Season with Loss at West Liberty

Walsh fell 48-17 in its 15th season opener at West Liberty State College last Saturday.  This week the Cavs travel to Quincy University (IL) to meet the Hawks in a Mid-States Football Association crossover game at 2 pm (EST). The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network (AM 900 WCER, News-Talk 640 WHLO) and on line at www.wcer.us and www.640WHLO.com.

West Liberty State (1-1) rolled-up 547 yards of total offense in the win over the Cavs.  The Hilltoppers scored six first half touchdowns, and led 41-3 at the half.  Walsh scored their only first half points on a 27-yard field goal from Eric Buchanan (Jr., Lehigh Acers, FL/East Lee County) with 8:49 left in the second quarter.  Walsh would add two touchdowns in the second half, one in each quarter.  Rashid Sharif (So., Cleveland, OH/Collinwood) scored on a seven-yard run and quarterback Jim Shiplett (So., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) scored on a one-yard plunge.  Shiplett was 9-23 for 175 yards passing.  Joe Morgan (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley/Illinois) caught three passes for 104 yards and Mike McGill (Sr., Barberton, OH/Coventry) caught four passes for 49 yards.

Walsh and Quincy (1-1) are meeting for the sixth time, with the Cavs holding a 4-1 series advantage.  Quincy notched their first series victory last year, 27-25 at Fawcett Stadium. After winning their season opener against Indiana State (26-20), the Hawks fell 72-3 to Southeast Missouri last week.

MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Post 2-1 Week to Open

Walsh opened its 39th season with wins at Franciscan University (7-0) and with a split in the Walsh/Malone Comfort/Inn Subway Challenge on Friday and Saturday.  The Cavs fell in overtime to Aquinas College (4-3) on Friday, but rallied to blank Concordia University (2-0) on Saturday.  This Saturday, the Cavs are on the road at Grace College (2 pm).

Walsh opened the season with a 7-0 road over Franciscan University (0-1).  Ben Truax (So., Mansfield, OH/St. Peters) and Matt Bly (Fr., Bellbrook, OH/HS) each scored twice, with Bly adding an assist.  The Cavs handed out nine assists in the win.  Adam Brately (Sr., North Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas), Jordan Semple (Fr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) and Clint Merck (So., Randolph, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) also scored.  Walsh outshot Franciscan 19-7 and led in corner kicks 9-6.  Three Walsh goalies combined for the shutout.

Walsh (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season, losing 4-3 in overtime to the Aquinas College Saints (1-1). The scoring went back and forth with Walsh starting out fast with a goal by Josh Habeck (Fr., 6-0, Uniontown, OH/Lake) on an assist from Nathaniel Milhoan (So., 5-11, Hartville, OH/Lake) eight minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Aquinas tied the game on a penalty kick. The Cavaliers scored their second goal from Broc Sutek (Fr., 6-0, Minerva, OH/HS) on an assist by Clint Merck (So., 6-0, Randolph, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) in the 14th minute. The Saints answered again by tying the game at the 24-minute mark.  In the second half, Walsh took the lead on penalty kick by Ben Truax in the 60th minute. Aquinas rallied with a goal in the 87th minute to send it to overtime before scoring the winning goal in the 99th minute. Walsh outshot the Saints 12-6 and led in corner kicks 10-4. Eric Cooper (Fr., Minerva, OH/HS) made two saves in goal.

Walsh (2-1) bounced back from the Aquinas loss, with a 2-0 victory against Concordia University (1-1-1) the next day. It was a defensive game for the majority of the match with the first goal coming at the 70-minute mark from Matt Bly.  Broc Sutek added an insurance goal four minutes later.  Jordan Semple was credited with assists on both goals.  Mike Kelley (Fr., 6-0, Chagrin Falls, OH/NDCL) was in goal for the shutout.  The Cavaliers outshot Concordia 9-3 and had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Searching for First Win after Two Ties

Walsh (0-1-2) scored one goal in the first three matches, but played well in battling to two ties. Walsh and the College of Wooster played to a 1-1 double overtime tie last Tuesday.  The Cavs then fell 4-0 at Wilmington College on Saturday, then played Wittenberg University to a double overtime scoreless tie on Sunday.   The Cavs are idle this week.

Walsh's Abbie Sullivan (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) scored at the 74:26 mark to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead against Wooster.  Amanda Patrick (Sr., Medina, OH/Cloverleaf) assisted on the goal.  The Scots came back to knot the game on goal by Liz Mott at the 79:11 mark.  Neither side was able to notch the game winner in regulation or the two ten minute overtime periods.  Wooster outshot the Cavs 9-4.  Walsh keeper Jillian Zanney (So., Brunswick, OH/HS) was superb in goal with eight saves.

Wilmington College (2-0) erupted for three second-half goals to post a 4-0 win over Walsh in a non-conference game at Wilmington's Charlie Gilhart Field.  Katie Skaleski collected a rebound in front of the Cavaliers’ goal to give Wilmington a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.  Wilmington went up 2-0 when Jenna Curcio headed home her second goal of the season, off a Kristen Elam assist in the 53rd minute.  Quaker freshman Sarah Watters tallied the final goal on a cross at the 68-minute mark.  The Cavs were outshot 11-7.  Walsh keeper Jillian Zanney recorded seven saves. 

Walsh (0-1-1) and Wittenberg University (1-0-2) battled to a double overtime scoreless tie in the final game of the Wilmington/Wittenberg Classic. The Tigers outshot the Cavs 7-0 and led in corner kicks 7-4.  Cavs keeper Jillian Zanney recorded the shutout with seven saves.

VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Opens the Season on the Road with 4-1 Mark

NAIA No. 21 Walsh opened the season with four wins in five road matches.  The Cavs swept Thiel College at Baldwin-Wallace College on Tuesday, then won three of four matches at the SXU/IIT Crossover on Friday and Saturday.  The Cavs defeated William Penn University and University of Michigan-Dearborn on Friday.  On Saturday, then downed Illinois Tech, but fell to Trinity International.  This Friday and Saturday, the Cavs competeat the Hiram College Tournament.

Walsh (1-0) opened the season with a sweep (25-14, 25-16, 25-11) of Thiel College.  Freshman Julianne O'Donnell (5-10, Willowick, OH/Lake Catholic) paced the Cavs with 13 kills, 12 digs and three aces.  Freshman setter Hannah Duran (5-9, Grafton, OH/Midview) handed out 32 assists.  Megan Kelly (5-10, Jr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) added nine kills, Kristen Rohlfs (5-7, So., Loveland, OH/Mount Notre Dame) added 10 digs and Natalie Borland (6-0, Sr., Kent, OH/Roosevelt) had four assists and two blocks.

Walsh (3-0) added two more wins at the SXU/IIT Crossover. Walsh swept William Penn (3-2) by the scores 25-17, 25-8, 25-23. The Cavs were led by Julianne O'Donnell's double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. Freshman setter, Hannah Duran led with 30 assists and two aces. Kristen Rohlfs had a team-high 14 digs. Natalie Borland (6-0, Sr., Kent, OH/HS) added two blocks and eight kills.

Walsh defeated UM-Dearborn by the scores of 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-26. Duran led with 36 assists and Rohlfs added 18 digs. O'Donnell had her third double-double in a row with 19 kills and 16 digs. Borland and Duran each had one ace and Brittany Morris (5-11, Fr., North Royalton, OH/Padua) had a team-high three blocks.

Walsh (4-1) split the two matches played at the second day (Saturday) of the SXU/IIT Crossover.  Walsh started quickly sweeping IIT by the scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-23.  The middle hitters lead the offense with Natalie Borland and Brittany Morris both contributing 10 kills and a block.  The defense was lead by Julianne O'Donnell's 14 digs and Kristen Rohlfs with 12.

The second match was the toughest match of the year with Walsh losing in five games (25-16, 18-25, 25-27, 25-19, 13-15) to Trinity International University.  Hannah Duran lead the team with 46 assists and 21 digs. Sophomore Marie Jubak (5-8, So., Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) and Rohlfs each added 18 digs, while O'Donnell had a team-high 18 kills. Megan Kelly added 12 kills and Borland had 11 and 2.5 blocks. Rohlfs had a team-high three service aces.
