Should I receive a Meningitis Vaccination?

The Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) Executive Board has a keen interest in a recent study by Dr. Michael Bruce of the National Center for Infectious Diseases concerning the risk of meningitis in residence hall students. The organization has reviewed findings of studies regarding the risk of meningitis among college students in general and residence hall students in particular. The studies show that, while college students are generally at no greater risk of contracting meningitis than the general population of 18-22 year olds, the rate of infection is modestly increased among first year students who live in the residence halls.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have updated their recommendations and guidelines for meningococcal disease. Meningococcal disease can be spread from person to person by direction contact with mouth and throat secretions (i.e. kissing, sharing a toothbrush, eating utensils, drinks, cigarettes, or by coughing or sneezing directly in someone's face). Studies suggest lifestyle factors such as crowded living conditions, stress, smoking, and binge drinking may put students at a greater risk. Measures students can take to lower their risk of contracting meningococcal meningitis include attention to good hand washing, maintaining a healthy lifestyle including avoiding the risk factors mentioned above, and a vaccination that is effective in prevention some strains of the meningitis bacteria.

There is no consensus by the university community or the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International with regard to vaccination of students for meningitis. Vaccination is not required; however, we encourage you to speak with your family physician or Walsh University Student Health Services to determine whether vaccination is appropriate for your situation.
