Student Life and Services > Summer Orientation FAQ's Summer Orientation FAQ's
Why is Orientation mandatory?
There are many reasons why Orientation is mandatory for incoming students. First, during Summer Orientation you will take your required Placement Tests, make preferences for your academic schedule, and learn general information about the University. However, beyond these tasks Orientation is key to connecting you with your peers. Orientation is designed to help you feel more comfortable when you begin classes in the Fall. Many students make their first college friendships during Orientation and some even find their roommate. You will not want to come in the Fall and realize that everyone has made connections at Orientation! Trust us, you will be glad you participated!
What is Placement Testing? What is the purpose of Placement Tests?
During the morning of Friday and Saturday of Summer Orientation you will participate in Placement Testing for english, math and a foreign language. Nursing and Business Division majors will take an additional placement test specific to their program. Any materials required for these tests will be provided (calculators, pencils, etc). The information obtained from these placement tests will be used to develop your academic schedule for the Fall 2008 semester. These tests do not determine your admission to the University. The tests are used to place students in a Math, English, and Foreign Language course where he/she will succeed. As a result, students should not be stressed regarding these tests!
Please note that ALL students are required to take placement tests, no exceptions (this includes students who have taken post secondary courses).
I know that I will schedule my classes during Summer Orientation, how does that work?
Walsh University utilizes a unique system for scheduling our freshman students. In developing each schedule, the University considers information provided by the student. This includes placement test scores, student interest, athlete or non-athlete status, resident or commuter status, post-secondary courses, etc. During Summer Orientation incoming students are able preference their courses based on their interest. Then in consideration of all information collected, Walsh faculty determine the student schedule. All decisions are made in the best interests of students. Please note that after the Fall semester students create their own schedule in consultation with their Academic Advisor.
I am going to be a commuter student, why do I need to stay overnight for Orientation?
This is a good question. One key aspect of Orientation is making connections with your peers. The overnight experience is a great opportunity to meet various people in your class. You will most likely meet other commuters. Trust us; the more connections you make with students and the University the better your experience will be.
I have never or hardly ever stay away from home, what will staying overnight be like?
First, please know that many students have anxiety about staying overnight so many students at orientation will be feeling the same as you! However, the overnight stay still remains one of the most popular aspects of Summer Orientation. It is in this experience that students really make connections with their peers. In addition, Orientation Leaders who were once in your shoes are there to help you along.
When do I get my student ID?
Students will have their student ID photo taken during Summer Orientation and will receive their ID during Opening Weekend (weekend before classes).
