Team History

Women's Cross Country History "It will be great to have the women to compliment our very successful men's program." Men's Head Coach Dan McCallion echoed those words when Walsh initiated women's cross country in 1982 and how true that statement turned out to be. Walsh's first team finished second in the prestigious All-Ohio meet, won the District 22 championship and finished 13th at the NAIA Nationals. The initial Cavs team finished 20-2 and produced future stars in Darla Pitt, Julie Hawk and future Wall of Famer Vicki McNicholas. Pitt was also Walsh's first district champion when she won the individual crown in 1982. Since that first season the Cavs have had one of Ohio's most respected programs. Walsh has had eight individual qualifiers for the national championships and produced ten NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Wendi Schrock became Walsh's first NAIA All-American when she placed 11th at the national meet in 1992. Schrock then repeated her All-American performance the following year. Other national qualifiers include Carol Novak, Christine Eberts, Katherine Drap and Heidi Fledderjohann. The program has had a revival with the hiring of Al Campbell as head coach in 1999. Campbell guided the Cavs to a second place American Mideast Conference finish in 2000 and was named AMC Coach of the Year.
