What's New, 2011-10-19
The Walsh Community suffered a significant loss on October 19, 2011 when Br. Joseph Power, FIC, a resident Brother of Christian Instruction, passed into the loving arms of the Lord this morning at the age of 86. A long-time faculty member and campus spiritual advisor, Br. Power was a powerful speaker, a riveting storyteller, a compassionate educator and a devoted friend to all who knew him on campus. Born in ...Liverpool, England in 1925, to an Irish Catholic father and a Scottish Catholic mother, Br. Power was one of seven children. In 1936, he was admitted to St. Marys College, Southampton, a boarding school operated by the Brothers of Christian Instruction. He later earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of London and then gained exhibition to St. Catherines College, Oxford, where he read for an Honors Degree in English Language and Literature. While at St. Catherines, Br. Power had the opportunity to study with some of the worlds most distinguished scholars, including C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Information about final arrangements are forthcoming.
Br. Power summed up one his philosophies of life during a 2010 interview with a reporter from the Massillon Independent.
We are all different but we are all made in the image of God, each of us a unique note in that divine symphony, he said. I turn to the great C.S. Lewis who reminds us that there is no insignificant life and there are no ordinary men and women. We are all made in the image of God and destined for an eternity of joy I believe that.
Counseling Services and the office of Campus Ministry is open and available to anyone who may wish to stop by throughout the week.
