5th and 6th graders to shadow Walsh University students

North Canton, Ohio, November 14, 2006 - Students in Walsh University's Human Development and Sociology classes will be host to 75 5th and 6th graders from Compton Elementary School in Canton on Friday, November 17, 2006, for a "Taste of College." The project is part of the University's commitment to service learning, and is being spearheaded by Dr. Kimberly Metz, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Dr. Shauntey James, Assistant Professor of Sociology.

"By shadowing our students throughout a typical day on campus, we're hoping to expose these young students to a taste of college life, encouraging them to seek the opportunities a college education provides," said Dr. Metz. "The experience is just as valuable to our students, allowing for both a service learning encounter and a chance to explore themes that are being studied in class."

As part of the project, the Compton students will go to classes with their Walsh University counterparts, attend a religious service, listen in on sociology and human development subject presentations and even have lunch at the University cafeteria.
