3+2 Program One of Only Two in the Nation
Walsh University and the University of Dayton (UD) School of Law are now accepting applications for the new 3+2 program that will allow students to achieve a bachelor's and law degree in as little as five years, rather than the usual seven years.
The 3+2 program is believed to be just one of two such programs in the nation.
With the recent launch of a joint Walsh/UD Engineering program, the new 3+2 law program is the second academic agreement between the two Catholic institutions.
Accepted students first apply to Walsh University as their undergraduate institution and earn provisional acceptance to the University of Dayton School of Law. The first three years will be at Walsh University. The fourth and fifth years will be in Dayton where students will complete their bachelor's degrees by satisfying undergraduate electives with credits from the first year of law school.
Participating Walsh students can choose from three bachelor degree legal studies tracks in business, sociology and humanities.
"Adding law to our already existing program with the University of Dayton in Engineering gives Walsh students two excellent ways to earn a graduate degree with a significant savings in time and tuition," said Walsh Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Douglas Palmer, Ph.D.
The University of Dayton was among the first to offer a two-year accelerated option when the American Bar Association provided law schools that opportunity a decade ago. In 2014, Ohio Supreme Court rule changes allowed students to apply to law schools after three years of undergraduate work.
"There are many 3+3 programs nationwide, but we wanted to create a 3+2 program to provide students a more affordable higher education option," said University of Dayton School of Law Dean Andrew Strauss. "This will shave a year of tuition and two years of living expenses for students, plus allow them to enter the workforce and start their earning clocks two years sooner."
