Walsh University has announced the promotion of Rachel Hammel, Ph.D., to Associate Dean for Research. Prior to this position, Dr. Hammel has served as the University’s Director of Grants and Sponsored Research since 2013.
Hammel brings 20 years of experience to this position including more than a decade in sponsored research from the University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University, where she served in central office pre-award research administration, departmental research administration and as a research assistant on a broad spectrum of grant funded research projects.

Collaborative research is a high-impact educational practice we hope to expand at Walsh," said Walsh University Provost Douglas Palmer, Ph.D. "Dr. Hammel’s extensive professional background in research and her success in establishing and directing Walsh’s grants office has made her uniquely qualified for this highly collaborative and important new position on campus."
Dr. Hammel’s primary role will be to support faculty research. In addition to supervising grants and serving as the Institutional Review Board administrator, Dr. Hammel will represent the Office of the Provost in administration of the Faculty Development Fund, facilitate best practice professional development in collaborative research and work with campus stakeholders on research components. In addition, she will co-administer Walsh’s prestigious scholarship applications for students.
She earned her Ph.D. and master’s degree in sociology from Case Western Reserve and her master’s degree in public administration from the University of Akron. Dr. Hammel’s research interests include aging and life course, sociology of the family and research methods.
Dr. Hammel resides in Jackson Township with her husband and two children.
