The Walsh University World Student Organization hosted its third annual International Flag Ceremony on Friday, November 18.

As a part of International Education Week, this special event is organized annually to formally welcome new and returning international students to Walsh. This fall, the University welcomed approximately 100 international students from 34 different countries to campus.

"If a student arrives to Walsh from a country that has never been a part of our family, we’ll have the President honor us and officially accept their flag to our collection," said Kristi Campbell. "I think it is important to recognize the places of birth, those who are international ambassadors and their culture and the amazing members of the World Student Organization."

Walsh’s newest flag for Belgium was added to the collection, which has grown to include 85 flags from around the world. The event began with an opening prayer that was translated by students from the countries of Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Rwanda, Honduras and China. The ceremony also included remarks by Walsh President Richard Jusseaume along with cultural dance and vocal performances by the Walsh University Chorale, Rebecca Blankenship accompanied by Jon Paul Della Pia (Canada), Myles Cronwall and Brandon Denton (Canada) and a Latin Dance by Gabriela Laguna Leon Venezuela.

During his remarks, President Jusseaume highlighted how Walsh has been "international" from the beginning, and noted that in the first class of 67, four students were international.

"We recognize the tremendous contributions that all of you make to our community. You bring a variety of cultures, you bring a variety of talents, you bring your own communication skills, and you share them with us even as we attempt in our own way to teach you the culture of the United States. You are so wonderful in your participation in activities on campus, in the classroom, and beyond," said President Jusseaume. "You are all a part of the Walsh University family. We value you. We will support you. And we’ll protect you. Thank you for being here, and thank you for your great contributions."

Upcoming World Student Organization events include the highly anticipated annual International Dinner on March 18, 2017.
