PJ Chavez Honored for Community and Professional Leadership

Walsh University’s Director of Liturgical Services Pedro (PJ) Chavez was honored on June 19 as a member of the 2018 class of ystark! Twenty under 40! professional leaders. 

Launched in 2008 by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Canton RepositoryTwenty under 40! recognizes 20 young engaged professionals across various sectors of the business, civic, government, arts, education and non-profit communities. Nominees are selected based on career acumen, community service and trusteeship, and personal and professional achievements. The selection committee is comprised of diverse business and community leaders representing a range of industry sectors from around Stark County.

Pedro J. Chavez (PJ) is the Director of Liturgical Services for the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel at Walsh University. He was appointed to his current position in the summer of 2006 and holds an MAED, from Walsh. PJ was also honored this May by the 2018 senior class as the Terrance Porter Mentor of the Year.

PJ is active in the Stark County community as a member of the Board of Trustees of Voices of Canton, Inc., and as a musician organizer and leader for “Sing Stark.”  He serves with the Catholic Interracial Council of Stark County, which created a scholarship in his name. He was also honored as the Alumnus of the Year at St. Mary in Massillon for his involvement in the community.

PJ has led numerous retreat programs and presentations speaking on the importance of values, service and faith. Among his many volunteer commitments, he organized a benefit Christmas concert at Christ the Servant Parish that raised more than $5,000 for student scholarships. He has also won seven cooking competitions, including Best Appetizer for three years for the Catholic Charities Men Who Cook competition, The Catholic Charities Fr. Fete Food for the Soul Award for two years, Judges’ Choice for the STA KNAC Chili Cook-Off and Casino Knight in 2016 and Best Entrée for Catholic Charities Men Who Cook competition in 2017.  He is also a Certified CFII (flight instructor) with the FAA.

PJ and his wife Bethany are the proud parents of their two children, Luca and Caleb.

Walsh alumna Dana Wobser ’05 & ’06 was also among this year’s class of honorees.  Dana was honored with the Walsh Young Alumni Leadership Award in 2017.

Dana earned her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Walsh University in 2005 and her MBA in Management, also from Walsh, in 2006. Upon her graduation with her MBA, Dana joined Deloitte, one of the Big 4 accounting firms, as an Audit Associate and was soon promoted to Audit Senior.  In 2009, she joined Myers Industries in Akron, the largest wholesale tire repair supply distributor in the U.S., as an internal auditor. She has been promoted six times the eight years she’s been with the company and is currently the Director of Human Resources for the Distribution Segment. Dana has also found time to give back in significant ways to her community. She has been active with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Torchbearers, United Way of Summit County and Norton City Schools.
