Professor of Biology and Theology to Kick off Presidential Thought Leadership Speaker Series

Walsh University announces the Presidential Thought Leadership Series will officially launch on Founders’ Day, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. at the Barrette Business and Community Center, and all are invited to this free public event. The keynote address will be given by distinguished bioengineer, bioethicist and theologian Rev. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P. on Understanding Human Sex and Intimacy with Faith and Reason.

Fr. Nicanor is a compelling professor, research fellow and author.  He received his Ph.D. in Biology from M.I.T. where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) fellow in the laboratory of Prof. Leonard Guarente.  Fr. Nicanor also completed a Pontifical Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.  His NIH-funded laboratory at Providence College is investigating the genetic regulation of programmed cell death using the yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans, as model organisms.  His first book, Biomedicine and Beatitude: An Introduction to Catholic Bioethics, was published by the Catholic University of America Press.

Walsh University President Tim Collins established the thought leadership series to bring community, business and public service leaders on campus to attend lectures from world-renowned scholars and practitioners.

It is fitting that the speaker series will begin on Founders’ Day, which commemorates the 61st anniversary of when the Brothers of Christian Instruction officially opened the doors of Walsh. It’s also one year to-the-date when Walsh formally welcomed Dr. Tim Collins as its seventh president with an Installation Holy Mass and Ceremony. His seven initiatives include creating a Cavs Cor Cordium, the immediate acceptance of all transfer students, free academic courses for people over 65 years old, an annual Catholic Higher Education Symposium, enhanced digital offerings, the formation of a Walsh United Press and the Presidential Thought Leadership Series.

This year’s speaker series is sponsored by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Giving Society.
