Joshua David Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Honors Student Athlete

Walsh University football player Alexander Oaks was honored as the 2021 recipient of the Joshua David Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund during a special halftime presentation of the Walsh football game against Ashland Eagles, on Thursday, September 30 at GlenOak Stadium. The memorial scholarship honors Joshua Zimmerman, a 2001 Walsh University graduate and former football captain who lost his life in a biking accident in August of 2003. The student scholarship fund was established at Walsh University through a gift made by Thomas and Jackie Zimmerman in honor of their son Joshua.

"We created the Joshua David Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of our son, Joshua, and we are proud to see it continue to help student athletes," said Thomas Zimmerman. "Joshua loved attending and playing football at Walsh University. We wanted to help other students achieve the same goals as our son."

Scholarship recipient Alexander Oaks, a graduate of GlenOak High School in Canton, OH, is a senior at Walsh majoring in business finance. During his high school athletic career at GlenOak, Oaks played football, basketball and ran track. He plays defensive end for the Cavaliers. He was also a member of Malone’s football team when they shut it down and has found a new home and a positive experience here at Walsh.

Joshua Zimmerman earned four letters for the Walsh University Cavaliers as a defensive lineman. The 6-3, 247-pound Zimmerman played for the Cavs from 1997 to 2000. Zimmerman was a graduate of Lake High School, where he earned honorable mention All-Federal League honors.

The Joshua David Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to a member of the Walsh University football team, who has, like Joshua "demonstrated a high sense of integrity and character." Recipients are full-time students in good-standing, displaying financial need.
