Scholar Athletes Win Big in Friendly Competition Between Walsh and Malone

More than $121,000 Combined Donations Made in the Fill the Cup Challenge

Each year, Walsh University and Malone University challenge each other on the basketball court for the Mayor’s Cup Challenge.  To up the ante this year and raise funds for student athletes, the universities added a friendly fundraising competition to “fill the cup” with donations and announce the winner at the annual Mayor’s Cup game between the long-time rivals, which was held this year on January 12th. The university with the greatest number of donors making gifts of any size between January 5 and 12 would win. The Cavaliers not only won both the men’s and women’s basketball games, off court Walsh edged ahead in the final hours of the #Fillthecup23 challenge by 80 donors, raising $63,192 to Malone’s $58,381 for athletic departments and teams, making them the real winners.

It’s a rivalry that runs deep!  For more than 60 years, the Malone University Pioneers have brought out the competitive spirit in Walsh University Cavaliers students, alumni, parents and fans alike – and they didn’t disappoint. Walsh secured donations from 1,147 donors while Malone raised funds from 1,067 donors. To add to the excitement, both schools posted several challenge gifts to match donations that doubled the impact.

Not only does Walsh get bragging rights, Malone’s president must wear the Cavalier’s jersey for a day.
