Associate Chaplain and Faculty Member Father Louis Bertrand Lemoine, O.P., Looks Forward to Contemplative Life as a Monk

Walsh University Associate Chaplain and faculty member Father Louis Bertrand Lemoine, O.P., a Dominican friar who has been a source of spiritual guidance for individuals on campus as both a teacher and minister for nearly three years, will be pursuing his calling as a Carthusian monk. His last day will be Saturday, May 6.

While a Dominican friar leads a life that blends both prayer and also active ministry, a monk leads a life dedicated to prayer, penance, and listening for the voice of God. Carthusian monks live the spirituality of hermits. Father Louis Bertrand will be going to the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration, which is a Carthusian monastery in Vermont. “We are thankful for the spiritual connections Father Louis Bertrand made with students during some of the most formative years of their lives,” said President Tim Collins. “Our mission at Walsh is to prepare people to make choices grounded in strong values and integrity, to pursue a purpose that gives their life meaning. It took great courage for Father to step out in faith and follow the Lord’s will.”

An active search is underway for a Senior Chaplain to replace Father Thomas Cebula who was appointed by the Most Reverend David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown, to serve as the administrator of St. Louis Parish in Louisville and Sacred Heart Parish in Harrisburg in November 2022.

As the only Catholic university in the Youngstown Diocese, the Bishop and his administration have ensured that Walsh University Holy Mass, adoration and confessions continue uninterrupted. Holy Mass is offered once daily, Sunday through Friday. Campus Ministry, led by Ben Walther, is also actively engaging students in activities, including a recent retreat to Tuscarawas County, Theology of the Body study group, weekly IGNITE Christian formation and community meetings.
