Walsh University Increases Advanced Online Degree Program Offerings in Growing Field

New Post-Professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program Offered 100% Online

Walsh University increased its advanced online degree program offerings, adding the new Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate (PP-OTD) program with no residency requirements. Open to licensed occupational therapists with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, the program allows occupational therapists the flexibility to participate in academic studies while maintaining their employment and immediately applying what they learn to real-world situations.

“This advanced degree offering is ideal for practicing occupational therapists who would like to assume a leadership role and help shape the future of the field,” said Dr. Michele Tilstra, Interim Program Director, Occupational Therapy. “The program supports personal and professional growth through critical thinking, collaboration, cultural humility and spirituality, while offering opportunities for career development and advancement.”

The PP-OTD is a 33-credit hour program offered in a convenient eight-week format that provides an advanced practice educational experience emphasizing leadership development, instructional competence, and the appraisal and application of research to clinical practice. Students will enhance their occupational therapy practice through mentorship and innovative experiences in community clinical settings.

“The overarching goal of our program is to deepen knowledge within a specific area and its application to practice, pursue evidenced-based practice as a clinician, apply research methodology to answer a clinical question, and apply clinical reasoning to practice at an advanced level,” Dr. Tilstra said.

Graduates of the program will contribute to the field through scholarship, teaching or integration. They’ll be equipped to design and implement innovative programs, advocate for occupationally just, equitable, diverse and inclusive communities, raise awareness for and expand opportunities for OT professionals, contribute to evidence-based literature and educational materials, impact global health concerns, and advance professional reach with a focus on community-based and emerging areas of practice.
