Walsh University will celebrate its international student community during the annual International Flag Ceremony on Thursday, November 20, in the Toot Global Learning Center. Hosted by the World Student Organization (WSO) and the Office for Culture and Belonging, the ceremony honors Walsh’s student body, which this year represents 36 countries, including the United States.
This year, Walsh is home to 123 international students, including 25 new or transfer students and 14 participating in post-graduation Optional Practical Training (OPT). While no new countries are represented, Iraq and Uzbekistan return to the ceremony after several years’ absence, marking a welcome addition to the campus community.
Under the leadership of WSO President Meklit Tofu and Vice President Aliya Shine, the ceremony will feature students proudly carrying their national flags across the stage as their country is called, followed by a group photo that symbolizes Walsh’s dignity, solidarity, and equality.
The program will include musical performances by the Walsh University Chorale and a traditional Nepali dance. Guests will have the opportunity to sample international beverages, including coffee from El Salvador, Ethiopia, Vietnam, and Colombia; hot chocolate from El Salvador; and Thai iced tea. Desserts will include Chinese almond cookies, mini cannoli made by Chef Mike (Sodexo), and homemade baklava by Dr. Kimberly Cleveland, Dean of the College of Health Sciences.
Supported by Director Megan Huston and Coordinator Katherine Rivera from the Office for Culture and Belonging, along with the International Ambassadors, the International Flag Ceremony remains one of Walsh’s most cherished traditions—celebrating cultural pride, community, and connection across continents.
