Walsh University Exercise Physiology Programs Earn Prestigious National Accreditation

Walsh University has earned academic program accreditation from the American Society of Exercise Physiologists (ASEP) for both its undergraduate Exercise Science and Master of Science in Exercise Physiology programs. ASEP is the only professional organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to advancing exercise physiology as a healthcare profession.

In its official notification letter, ASEP commended Walsh for the exceptional quality and thoroughness of its accreditation materials, noting that the College of Health Sciences at Walsh serves as “a model for other programs seeking accreditation.”

“This is a big moment for our students and for Walsh,” said Dr. Kelsey Scanlon, Program Director and Chair of Exercise Science. “ASEP accreditation tells future employers and graduate programs that our students are graduating from a program grounded specifically in exercise physiology, not a broad, general track. What makes Walsh stand out is how intentionally we blend rigorous science with hands-on application. Our students don’t just study concepts. They apply them every day in our labs and clinical settings, working alongside faculty who are active clinicians and researchers.”

Dr. Kimberly Cleveland, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, said the accreditation reflects both academic excellence and growing workforce demand.

“Healthcare continues to evolve, and communities need professionals who are scientifically trained, clinically prepared, and ethically grounded,” Dr. Cleveland said. “This accreditation affirms that Walsh is meeting that need with intention and integrity. Our programs are designed not only to prepare students for certification and advanced study, but to equip them to improve health outcomes and serve others with competence and compassion.”

Accreditation through ASEP confirms that Walsh’s curriculum aligns with the discipline-specific competencies required of professional exercise physiologists. It distinguishes Walsh’s programs from more generalized exercise science degrees while reinforcing exercise physiology as a recognized healthcare profession. The accreditation also ensures students are academically prepared to pursue the Exercise Physiologist Certified credential should they choose to do so.

With this designation, Walsh faculty and students gain expanded access to ASEP membership benefits, professional networking opportunities, certification pathways, and scholarly publication resources, further strengthening the University’s commitment to excellence in health sciences education.
