NORTH CANTON, Ohio: Walsh University is proud to announce that William Butler, a dedicated scholar-athlete, has been named the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Joshua David Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship. Butler also was the 2025 recipient of the scholarship.
This special honor was presented by Joshua’s father, Tom Zimmerman, during the Maroon & Gold Weekend football game on Sept. 19, 2026, against Lake Erie College.
Butler, the son of Chad and Jessica Butler, is a graduate of Lake High School in Hartville, Ohio, and is a senior at Walsh University pursuing a degree in Business Marketing and Professional Sales. A leading offensive receiver for the Cavaliers, Butler has demonstrated excellence both on the field and in the classroom.
“I’m truly honored to receive the Zimmerman Scholarship for the second time. It means so much to me that this award honors the memory of an alumnus of both my high school and Walsh University,” Butler said. “I’m grateful for the support and encouragement from the Walsh and Lake communities and the Zimmerman family.”
The scholarship is a tribute to the life and legacy of Joshua “Zim” Zimmerman, a beloved member of the Hartville community and a 2001 Walsh University graduate. Zimmerman was a standout on the football field, serving as the defensive captain and earning multiple academic and athletic awards. His remarkable achievements extended beyond the gridiron, earning him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
Zimmerman’s life was tragically cut short in a biking accident in August 2003. To honor his memory, his parents, Thomas and Jackie Zimmerman, established the Joshua David Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund at Walsh University. The scholarship is awarded annually to a football player who, like Zimmerman, exemplifies integrity, character and commitment both on and off the field.
“Joshua’s time at Walsh meant the world to him, and we’re honored to help other student-athletes achieve their dreams in his memory,” said Thomas Zimmerman.
Zimmerman earned four letters as a defensive lineman for the Cavaliers from 1997 to 2000, standing out for his skill and dedication on the field. The scholarship continues his legacy, supporting student-athletes who demonstrate financial need and uphold the values he embodied.
