Walsh University to Host ‘Eyes of Freedom’ Art Display, Salute to Service Football Game

Walsh University will host the art display "Eyes of Freedom” from Nov. 5-8, and will have its annual Salute to Service football game at noon Saturday, Nov. 7, as part of the university’s commemoration of Veterans Day.

At the Salute to Service game, veterans and active military receive free admission, a free T-shirt and a voucher for free food as the Cavaliers face the Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers at Larry Staudt Field.

In addition, from Nov. 5-8 Walsh will host the artistic display, “Eyes of Freedom,” outside the Gaetano M. Cecchini Family Health and Wellness Complex for community viewing.

The “Eyes of Freedom” is a traveling memorial created by Columbus, Ohio, artist Anita Miller. It depicts the fallen members of the Columbus-based Lima Company of the U.S. Marine Corps. Between May and August 2005, 22 Marines and one Navy corpsman from Lima Company were killed in action while deployed in Iraq. Miller created the exhibit as a memorial to the fallen.

“With Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Walsh University wanted to find a way to say thank you to those who have served,” said Joshua Ruiz, veteran affairs coordinator at Walsh. “We hope that area veterans will come out to enjoy the football game as we salute their service and sacrifice.”

Ruiz also encouraged the general public to visit the Walsh campus to view “Eyes of Freedom” during its four-day exhibit, as a way of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
