Almeida came to Walsh University with a desire to build a future centered on service, leadership, and helping others through healthcare. Along the way, he discovered a clear path toward Physical Therapy—one that has been strengthened by Walsh’s career-ready resources and hands-on opportunities. From career-focused events and networking opportunities to guidance on building a strong resume, Juan says Walsh consistently equips students with the tools they need to succeed beyond graduation. “Walsh doesn’t promise what the future will look like,” he shared, “but it gives me peace knowing I have a strong support system and people who truly care about helping me accomplish my purpose.”
Juan’s journey to Walsh began before he ever set foot on campus. His first interaction with the University was through an online tour, and he clearly remembers how his mom immediately fell in love with the chapel. Juan was struck by how beautifully Walsh portrayed its Catholic identity and impressed by the facilities he saw during that virtual experience. Choosing Walsh from among 15 colleges, he says the University quickly became a second home.
As an international student, Juan shared that the transition to a new country was both exciting and challenging. In moments of vulnerability, his faith became a source of strength, grounding him during times of homesickness and uncertainty. “Being an international student makes me unique and maybe different, but I don’t feel left out or out of place. Walsh has provided me with all the tools I need to feel safe and at home.”
During his time at Walsh, Juan says his faith has deepened and helped him discover a greater sense of purpose. “During my time here, the Lord has shown me that each of us has a greater purpose, one that we can only discover when we learn to hear His voice and remain open to following it,” he shared. Through faith and service, Juan has gained a deeper understanding of who he is. He is no longer just chasing a diploma or personal success, but is focused on contributing meaningfully to his community every day, both inside and outside the classroom.
One of Juan’s most meaningful experiences at Walsh was earning his first on-campus job. Before coming to Walsh, he had no prior work experience, and the opportunity marked an important stage in his life. Through this role, he grew in responsibility and confidence while also feeling more connected to the Walsh community. His growth continued when he stepped into a leadership role as a Resident Assistant, an experience that helped him develop communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills that will be essential in his future career in healthcare.
Academically, Juan found his place in the Exercise Science (Pre-PT) program after initially starting as a Biology major. The support, passion, and mentorship of the Exercise Science faculty affirmed his decision and strengthened his confidence in pursuing Physical Therapy. He credits his professors for being deeply intentional with their students—serving not only as educators, but as mentors who want to see their students thrive as professionals and as people.
Beyond the classroom, Juan is actively involved in campus life as a member of the Men’s Soccer Team, Business Club, Volleyball Club, and the International Student Organization. These experiences, along with the guidance of faculty, staff, teammates, and friends, have shaped his sense of belonging and personal growth. He says the Walsh community continually inspires him through its welcoming spirit and commitment to service.
Looking ahead, Juan plans to attend graduate school and become a Physical Therapist, gaining professional experience in the United States before eventually returning to Ecuador. His long-term goal is to open nonprofit clinics that provide accessible care to underserved communities. Inspired by his faith, his family, and the formation he has received at Walsh, Juan hopes to use his education to make a lasting and meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Supported by a community that values faith, service, and professional formation, Juan feels confident he is gaining more than a degree. He is gaining purpose, preparation, and perspective for the road ahead. “Walsh meets you where you are,” Juan said, “believes in your potential, and walks alongside you.”
