Cleveland Museum of Natural History in the Center for Conservation and Biodiversity - Identifying the aquatic plants located on several glacial lakes throughout Northeast Ohio, surveying plants both by foot and by canoe.
Summer Biology Research Initiatives
Walsh University has a strong undergraduate research program for Biology majors. Examples of current initiatives include:
- Dr. Jennifer Clevinger, Associate Chair of the Division of Math and Sciences and Professor of Biology, is working with Biology majors to compile a checklist of plants that inhabit Walsh University’s Hoover Park while conducting an analysis of the water quality of the park’s wetlands and stream. In addition, they are expanding this research to include a checklist of Stark County plants that can be utilized as a repository of data on local vegetation for future conservation and ecology research.
- Dr. Jackie Novak, Associate Professor of Biology, recently received a three-year grant for more than $350,000 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Through the grant, Novak and her students will research the effects of the ovarian hormone relaxin in the treatment of post-menopausal coronary artery dysfunction. The grant also provides stipends for a few students to conduct research during the summer. It is a collaborative project that gives Walsh students an opportunity to interact with graduate students and faculty from University of Florida School of Medicine, University of Mississippi Medical Center and University of Akron.
