Pursuing Excellence with Purpose and Confidence

For Samantha Kim, excellence grows from discipline, perseverance, and the decision to improve every single day. What began as a drive to earn top grades and compete at a high level developed into a deeper commitment to preparation, leadership, and steady growth.

A Biology Pre-Dentistry major with a Business minor, Samantha chose her path with intention. She plans to attend dental school after graduation and one day own her own practice. Her business minor supports that long-term goal and reflects her entrepreneurial mindset. Since her freshman year, she has embraced a rigorous science curriculum while competing as a member of the women’s basketball team.

Balancing academics and athletics reshaped her definition of excellence.

“Before Walsh, I thought excellence only meant the best grades or being the best at everything,” Samantha said. “Walsh has taught me that excellence is much more than that. It is about consistency, accountability, and leadership.”

Daily practices, tough losses, demanding labs, and long nights of studying strengthened her resilience. She learned to prepare with purpose and to compete with confidence. That growth did not happen overnight.

“When I first got here, I felt a lot of pressure to perform well in both the classroom and on the basketball court,” she said. “Through challenging practices, long nights studying, and professors, teammates, and coaches who genuinely believed in me, I started to trust myself more.”

That trust became one of the most important outcomes of her Walsh experience.

“I think the greatest gift Walsh has given me is confidence in what I am able to do if I put my mind to something,” Samantha said. “Walsh helped me see that I am capable of more than I thought, and that growth does not happen all at once.”

She stays active across campus as a CRAHEC Scholar and as a member of Science Club, Pre-Healthcare Club, and Walsh SAAC. Each role strengthens her leadership skills and expands her perspective.

As a scholar-athlete, she learned to prioritize, manage her time, and hold herself accountable. The demanding schedule forced her to focus and to lead by example. Coaches challenged her to step forward. Professors pushed her to think critically and to dig deeper into the science behind her career goals. They also reminded her that she is more than a grade or a stat line.

The Walsh community shaped her just as much as the classroom did.

“Coming into a new environment not knowing anyone was scary at first,” she said. “But the welcoming community made it easier to adjust. Being surrounded by teammates, professors, and classmates who genuinely care made this place feel personal.”

She now defines excellence not as perfection, but as preparation. She understands the work required behind every strong performance. She holds herself to a higher standard and carries that mindset into every practice, every exam, and every leadership opportunity.

After graduation, Samantha plans to attend dental school and pursue her long-term goal of owning her own practice. Walsh has prepared her for that next step through rigorous science courses, leadership opportunities, and a community that challenges her to rise higher. She approaches her future with confidence, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose.

Her advice to future Cavaliers reflects the discipline she practices daily.

“Focus on your own growth rather than competing with others,” Samantha said. “Excellence is built on the small, daily choices you make. Show up prepared, ask questions, and lean into your professors, teammates, and peers. If you are willing to work, stay disciplined, and stay open to growth, you will find success here.”
