Major: Nursing

Shareen Awadallah has always looked up to her mother as a nurse and someone who instilled in her qualities like empathy, good communication and work ethic. So, it’s no surprise that Shareen would eventually express interest in the medical field.  Her decision to attend Walsh University and major in nursing with a minor in biology on a Pre-Physician’s Assistant (PA) track, was solidified when she was accepted into the Honors program, a challenging, interdisciplinary, and rewarding educational experience that came with scholarship opportunities.

Her choice was further affirmed when she joined the nursing and science clubs, the student newsletter staff and was offered a research position as a freshman.

“The opportunities to grow as an individual as well as socially, culturally, academically and professionally are in abundance at Walsh, whether you are Catholic, Muslim, or hold other beliefs,” she said. “As a nursing major in the Honors program, I have opened my mind to diverse perspectives, gained an understanding of the Judeo-Christian tradition, built a supportive network, and found my passion.”

At Walsh, student success is a priority. Each first-year student is matched with a Cavs Cor Leader, a returning student who is charged with providing peer mentorship and engagement, whether that be to foster positive relationships with other students, connect them to campus programs, services and resources, or engage them in enriching activities. With a peer mentor and supportive professors by her side, Shareen feels more prepared for the future than ever before.

“I am grateful for the friends and connections I have made. The bond is strong between staff and professors and the students at Walsh,” she said. “I’ve had conversations with my professors and advisors that have helped motivate me to follow my passions and interests.”

Because of the mentoring relationships she has cultivated, she has found her passion is in research and diagnostic medicine. She hopes to make her mother proud by caring and providing for her patients at the same caliber she does. After graduating from Walsh, Shareen plans to pursue Physician’s Assistant school while gaining experience as an oncology nurse.
